The metric

What is Domain Rating?

Domain Rating, commonly shortened to DR, is an Ahrefs metric that estimates the relative strength of a website's backlink profile. Scores run from 0 to 100 on a logarithmic scale, so moving between higher values is generally harder than moving between lower ones.

DR is useful for comparison, but it is not a Google metric and does not measure content quality, topical relevance, conversions, or whether a particular page will rank.

Three steps

How to use the free DR checker

  1. 1

Enter a domain such as example.com. A full page URL also works.

  2. 2

Select “Check DR for free” to retrieve the current Domain Rating.

  3. 3

Use the saved card to recheck later or compare it with related sites.

Transparent methodology

How this Domain Rating checker works

A domain score is only useful when its source and limitations are clear. Each check follows the same three-step process.

  1. 01

    Normalize the domain

We reduce the submitted URL to a valid public domain so a page path or tracking parameter does not distort the lookup.

  2. 02

    Request the current DR

The server requests the latest available Domain Rating from Ahrefs when you run the check. Indie Chains does not invent or estimate the score.

  3. 03

    Keep history in your browser

The result and timestamp can be saved locally for manual comparison. Public checks are not added to an Indie Chains profile.

Reading the result

What is a good Domain Rating?

A useful DR is relative to your niche and competitive set. These broad bands can provide context, but they are not quality grades or ranking guarantees.

0–20

Early authority

Common for new or lightly linked sites. Compare progress against sites at a similar stage.

21–50

Established profile

Often reflects a growing set of referring domains, but relevance and link quality still matter.

51–70

Strong authority

Usually associated with an established backlink profile and broader recognition in its market.

71–100

Very high authority

Typically reserved for widely referenced brands, publishers, platforms, and major websites.

Domain Rating vs. Google rankings

Domain Rating summarizes backlink authority. Google ranks individual pages for individual searches. A high-DR site can still have pages that do not rank, while a lower-DR site can rank well for focused, relevant queries.

Treat DR as one diagnostic signal alongside search intent, useful content, technical accessibility, topical relevance, and the quality of the pages linking to you.

Sustainable progress

How to improve website authority

Publish original resources that relevant sites genuinely want to reference.

Earn mentions from trustworthy pages with a real topical and audience fit.

Build relationships with founders, publishers, and operators in your market.

Avoid bulk swaps, link farms, automated outreach, and ranking guarantees.

Common DR questions

Need a practical next step after checking DR? Learn how reviewed backlink collaboration works inside Indie Chains.

Is this Domain Rating checker free?

Yes. The Indie Chains Domain Rating checker is free to use and does not require an account. Successful results are saved only in your current browser.

Do I need to sign up to check a website’s DR?

No. Enter a domain and run the check without creating an Indie Chains account or joining the network.

What does a Domain Rating of 0 mean?

A DR of 0 generally means Ahrefs sees little or no backlink authority for the domain. New sites and sites with very few referring domains commonly start near the bottom of the scale.

What is a good Domain Rating?

There is no universal good score. Compare a site with genuine competitors in the same niche, market, and stage instead of treating one number as an absolute quality grade.

How often should I check Domain Rating?

Monthly checks are usually enough for a directional view. DR can change as Ahrefs discovers links and recalculates its index, so daily checking rarely provides useful context.

Is Domain Rating the same as Domain Authority?

No. Domain Rating is an Ahrefs metric. Domain Authority is a separate metric from Moz. Both estimate website authority, but they use different data and calculations.

Where does this Domain Rating score come from?

Indie Chains requests the current score from Ahrefs' public Domain Rating data source when you run a check. The result is displayed with a timestamp so you know when it was retrieved.

Is Domain Rating a domain quality score?

Not by itself. DR estimates backlink-profile strength, not editorial quality, topical relevance, traffic, trustworthiness, or conversion potential. Review those signals separately before evaluating a website.

Does a higher DR guarantee better Google rankings?

No. DR measures backlink-profile strength on Ahrefs’ scale. Google rankings also depend on relevance, content quality, search intent, technical health, competition, and many other signals.
