The metric
What is Domain Rating?
Domain Rating, commonly shortened to DR, is an Ahrefs metric that estimates the relative strength of a website's backlink profile. Scores run from 0 to 100 on a logarithmic scale, so moving between higher values is generally harder than moving between lower ones.
DR is useful for comparison, but it is not a Google metric and does not measure content quality, topical relevance, conversions, or whether a particular page will rank.

A useful DR is relative to your niche and competitive set. These broad bands can provide context, but they are not quality grades or ranking guarantees.

Early authority

Established profile
Often reflects a growing set of referring domains, but relevance and link quality still matter.
51–70
Strong authority
Usually associated with an established backlink profile and broader recognition in its market.

Very high authority

Domain Rating vs. Google rankings
Domain Rating summarizes backlink authority. Google ranks individual pages for individual searches. A high-DR site can still have pages that do not rank, while a lower-DR site can rank well for focused, relevant queries.

How often should I check Domain Rating?
Monthly checks are usually enough for a directional view. DR can change as Ahrefs discovers links and recalculates its index, so daily checking rarely provides useful context.
Is Domain Rating the same as Domain Authority?
No. Domain Rating is an Ahrefs metric. Domain Authority is a separate metric from Moz. Both estimate website authority, but they use different data and calculations.
